The Nanjing Outsider Art Studio was founded in 2006 by Haiping Guo, a Chinese contemporary artist, as a pioneering program for outsider art in China. We are committed to providing a comprehensive range of support for people with mental health issues, in order to allow them to express themselves through artistic means. We also promote their artworks by organizing exhibitions, conferences, and various merchandise based on their artworks. Our goal is to improve the image and the living conditions of people suffering from mental health issues in China, and to foster their integration within Chinese society at large.
We form a dynamic, supportive community comprised of more than 100 outsider artists and their families, 7 full-time workers, over 50 volunteers, and many supporters from every walk of life. We have registered 3 nonprofit organizations, extended our services to a number of Chinese cities (way beyond our original headquarters in Nanjing) and have signed exclusivity contracts with 23 outsider artists.
The activities of the Nanjing Outsider Art Studio are both social and therapeutic: we intend to create a safe space where people suffering from mental disabilities can find balance in their lives, express themselves, and help each other, while also opening up and communicating with the rest of Chinese society through artistic means. The Studio allows them to find a home, both in the concrete and the spiritual sense, based on our core values of mutual understanding, respect, and tolerance.
